The Science of Layering

The Science of Layering

Braving the elements is not an exercise in brute force. Be smart and use the science behind layering clothing to keep you warm and focused when riding through harsh conditions. To “think layers” is to ride smarter, not harder.

Intro text

THE MODULAR SYSTEM

We built a modular collection based on the notion that each rider should have the freedom to choose which layers go under their garments, to match his or her unique riding style, activity level or climate conditions. Individually, the technology in REV’IT! fabrics excel at protecting a rider from the elements but are truly potent when used together. Every single piece from the base – and mid layer collection has been thoughtfully integrated to maximize the advantages of moisture management, heat retention and integrated protection.

The Outer Shell

THE FIRST LINE OF DEFENCETHE OUTER SHELL

The first line of defence against the worst Mother Nature has to throw at a motorcycle adventurer is the outer jacket. Most times referred to as the “shell”, this outermost component of the layering system is tasked to block out wind, water, snow, hail, insects and debris, all the while still allowing moisture to escape and ventilate.

About this page

The use of fabric technologies like GORE-TEX®, hydratex® and PWR|shell makes REV’IT! a leader in riding garments that keep you comfortable and focused when exposed to some of Mother Nature’s most wicked elements, as well as holding up when in contact with the road surface.

Our award-winning CE-rated protectors make sure that your limbs, chest and back are prepared for impact.

PROTECTING YOUR CORETHE MID LAYER

This key component bears the brunt of insulating duties. Technical materials like Polartec® Alpha® and Thermal Pro®, and PrimaLoft® Gold and Exkin® Air help to keep REV’IT! mid layers like the Halo, Climate 2 and Solar 2 jacket top performers in keeping the body warmth from escaping the layering system. The Storm WB jacket and pants play both sides of the net by not only keeping heat in, but also apply hydratex® | WindBarrier® tech to provide extra measures to keep the chill from getting past mid layer defences.

About this page

The mid layer is perhaps the hardest working element of any layering system; it’s designed to pull sweat vapors away from the base layer and force them to the outer shell, while at the same time trapping heat and retaining it for as long as possible.

The mid layer is the primary insulating component of most layering systems, and can make the difference between a warm, distraction-free ride or a cold, preoccupied one.

So, take stock of your climate and activity, and match it with the layer that best fits your needs. The choice is yours!

Not only are the materials used vital to retaining precious heat, but fit is just as crucial to keeping insulated areas of warm air between the other layers. Too loose and the internal air gets too cool. Too tight and there isn’t enough room to properly wick away sweat.

Climate 2

For those who can’t say no to adventure, the Climate 2 has arrived. This close-fitting mid layer is constructed with Polartec® Alpha®, a synthetic developed to meet the extreme demands of the U.S. Special Forces. Its individually waterproof fibers resist saturation and work actively to deliver “adaptable breathability,” retaining heat while the body is inactive and expelling sweat vapor during moments of higher motion—that means no more shedding or swapping of mid layers when switching between activities! Pair that with exceptional compressibility and quick drying time, and the Climate 2 is surefire hit for any athletic explorer, on or off the bike.

Solar 2

Down - the fine feathers from birds’ undercoats - is revered as an excellent insulator, but a poor pairing for adventure riding and touring. Why? It dries slowly and loses its insulating properties when wet. Plus, it can be expensive and cumbersome to clean. The Solar 2 was built in the feather-light, “puffy” style of popular down jackets, but with high-tech materials that bring everyday versatility to the table.

The PrimaLoft® Gold fill - used in its panels - is comprised of ultra-fine fibers that are individually water treated to create an overall water-repellency, and together they form a tight collection of air pockets that trap heat so well that the fabric retains 96% of its insulating capabilities even when wet. It packs down small enough to be stowed in a jacket’s back-pocket or a pannier side pouch; the perfect travel companion for cold-weather rides.

Halo

All of the warmth, none of the weight: that’s our Halo mid layer. Engineered with Polartec® Thermal Pro®, a synthetic fleece technology, the Halo offers the benefit of being highly breathable, fast-drying and durable, all in one smooth-fitting package with the fleecy softness revered by outdoor adventurers. The outer fabric is versatile enough to be worn underneath a technical 2 or 3-layer waterproof outer shell, but tough enough to be worn on its own in moderate temperatures.

Storm WB

The Storm WB jacket and pants have been named for exactly the type of challenge it is meant to face: windy, wet rides in unpredictable temperatures and conditions. Starting from the outside in, the Storm WB is built with the newly developed hydratex®|WindBarrier® fabric designed to block rain and wind, without losing any of its breathability. Under the shell, in strategic locations on the back and chest, are the Exkin® Air insulation panels, a fill that provides maximum insulation performance and virtually zero bulk and is recognized as one of the top insulation materials on the market. Take it along as a companion to your mesh jacket or use it wherever the wind and rain are a threat; it’s a full weather-resistant package that’s thin, ultra-warm and built to brave any storm.

First Layer of Defence: The Base Layer

We take our base and mid layers to the highest level; giving riders the comfort they’re after even when the elements dictate otherwise. Stay warm, stay dry and stay cool with our combination of layers. The right layers, of course!

Intro text

THE FIRST LAYER OF DEFENCE THE BASE LAYER

What lies at the core of any good layering system is exactly that - your core. Maintaining a steady core temperature in extreme heat or cold is essential for staying focused and preserving a quick reaction time. Whether you’re experiencing mountain air, or readying for a hot canyon ride, choosing the right base layer can help keep you dry and temperature-stable. Meet the Airborne and Sky base layers.

About this page

A good layering system starts with a base fabric that actively pulls moisture away from your skin in an action often referred to as “wicking.” If a base layer has good wicking properties, capillary action will draw the body’s humidity along its fibers and “breathe” it out on the other side. It’s the same principle that allows candles to work - wax melts and is pulled up the wick to fuel the candle flame. When wicking is done right, it equates to dry skin and a stable core body temperature.

On the other hand, in poorly wicking garments (we’re looking at you, cotton!) sweat can easily saturate the base layer and leave a layer of moisture trapped against the skin. Since water cools 25 times faster than air, in the wrong conditions, this may lead to danger: cool temps and wet skin can mean a drop in body temperature and lead to hypothermia.

And in warmer climates, moisture-blocked pores can prevent your skin from breathing, leading to overheating.

What, then, should you look for in a base layer? Your layering system depends on your climate and your level of activity, but whatever the purpose, it should be wicking moisture through the fabric and away from the skin, where it can more easily evaporate and/or be wicked away through the next layer—provided that’s a functional layer as well.

Our Airborne and Sky base layer systems use high-tech fabrics and innovative weaves that actively work to keep you dry and comfortable.

AIRBORNE

In hot climates, the Airborne and Airborne Ladies’ shirt and pants are an active defence against trapped sweat and overheating. As an added comfort, the Airborne layers were created using round-knit weaving technology, eliminating seams that could press against the skin where body armor is located or at the joints. This 360-degree comfort is perfect for wearing under your favorite mesh or leather motorcycle gear, but it doesn’t have to stop there. These highly stretchable layers are suitable for any sport or leisure activity!

SKY

When temperatures cool, the Sky and Sky Ladies’ shirt and pants step in to perform the essential function of pulling moisture away from the skin, without losing valuable heat generated by the core. Built with the same seamless, round-knit weaving technology as the Airborne, the Sky is a comfortable, warming base that’ll get you through the chilliest mountain canyon, and your first layer of defence against whatever the elements may throw at you.
