A CELEBRATION OF MOTORCYCLES BIKE SHED FESTIVAL: PRESENTED BY REV’IT!

As the lights turn red at the start of a race, tensions rise. Almost like MotoGP. Only in this case, a different tune is played from the lineup. It’s a symphony of a Harley twin and a BMW boxer, the high-revs of an inline-four superbike, and even a Royal Enfield. Welcome to The Bike Shed Festival.

APPROPRIATELY INNAPROPRIATE

The scene above describes the “Motley Cup;” the final race of the day where a mix of riders from all classes battle it out together for top honors on both Saturday and Sunday. And as you can see from the assortment of bikes, they came from all different backgrounds.

And that’s what the Bike Shed Festival was - or “is” actually - all about. “Run what you Brung” was the credo for many, as they turned up at the track on the bike they were racing. And despite all the different riders and different bikes involved, one common denominator rose to the surface: to enjoy motorcycles.

PRESENTED BY REV’IT!

Inaugural events are often the moment where most people and brands decide to see which way the wind blows before jumping on board; leading to the chicken versus egg question. In a day and age where “us motorcyclists” need to become more and more creative in order to claim our hobby, initiatives like Bike Shed Festival are a welcome change even when they don’t come about easily.

We jumped in at the deep end when The Bike Shed Motorcycle Club just started their now iconic Bike Shed Events years ago, and to encourage the next step in their ambitions to unite likeminded motorcyclists, we teamed up as headline sponsor for an epic first edition of The Bike Shed Festival. Because when initiatives arise that inspire people to ride, we’re definitely all ears.

UNITING THE MASSES

There are few ways to bring a diverse group of people together who normally wouldn’t socialize. Food and entertainment is one, but then again, so is the love of motorcycles. The Bike Shed Festival is/was open to all kinds of motorcyclists despite the Bike Shed Motorcycle Club being best known for offering a home to those interested specifically in the custom scene.

The inclusivity shown for riders of all backgrounds – along with great food and entertainment - proved their ability to create a welcoming space for the two-wheeled community to amass and have a fantastic time, and also to offer a level playing field to basically any kind of rider at this first-ever festival gathering.

SMILES FOR MILES

The Lydden Hill racetrack was chosen as the backdrop for the festival after last year’s well-planned pilot of the Café Racer Cup. However, with last year being all about the café racers, this year’s two-day event was open to all, as you will see from the pictures. From 125s on track, to 90s superbikes giving it a handful, to pannier-equipped commuter bikes scrapping their luggage across the tarmac and more.

How about the “easy rider cup”, where choppers, bobbers, baggers, and bikes alike battled it out on uncommon ground, tucking it in apehanger against apehanger while trying to keep as close to the apex as possible. Unsurprisingly, the turnup for the REV’IT! Café Racer Cup was higher due to it being a returning class since last year’s pilot. But by the sounds of many spectators, next year we will see a more even spread as the credo “I have to race here next year” echoed through the paddock.

About this page

EVERYONE’S A WINNER BABY

We’ll never say we’re not competitive. Our efforts in MotoGP wouldn’t quite be the same if we settled for mediocrity. And as a company, we’ve been known to challenge the status quo in order to improve. However, at an event like this, there are more winners than just those at the top of the box. During the weekend, we saw the most unlikely bikes to go around Lydden Hill ending up near the top of the time sheets.

While a more usual suspect for the win ended up further down the field because it might have been the rider’s first attempt at race track action. And even though there was a podium ceremony for each race - give credit where credit is due - the general consensus in the paddock was that everyone won, some a little and some a lot.

GET DIRTY

Another iconic event, albeit with a dirtier flavor, was the Malle Mile, normally organized in the summer. With the desire to also offer some off-road fun during the festival, the boys from Malle were called in to do what they do best, resulting in the “Malle Trials.”

Riders in favor of knobby tires took on the uphill off-road track, which proved to be challenging but massive fun. They too walked – nay rode – away with big smiles on their faces after putting their skills to the test. Or improving them.

About this page

GET ON YOUR BIKE

We love motorcycles, but it’s an event like this that allows us to understand it better. Because if Bike Shed Festival proved one thing, it is that the passion for motorcycles isn’t restricted to gender, age, race, or a specific motorcycle segment. The unique thing about the festival, however, is that it showed that when set up properly, virtually all types of motorcyclists unite.

We’ve been the proud headline sponsor for the first edition, and we encourage you to keep an eye out and prepare your bike for next year’s festival. Knowing the guys and gals at the Bike Shed, it will be even bigger and better.
