In pursuit of perfection and versatilityIt’s not always about sunshine and roses out there on the road. But that’s part of the fun of being out on two wheels. Plus, it makes for great stories, right?! Of course it does. Our dedication to designing and executing top-tier motorcycle gear that’s waterproof, breathable, and windproof includes working with the best-of-the-best. Let’s take a closer look at the GORE-TEX technology and our collection of GTX jackets, pants, and gloves.

When it comes to living up to the highest demands in terms of waterproofing and breathability, there’s only one company that actually guarantees to keep you dry no matter the weather: W.L. GORE & Associates, aka GORE-TEX. We use GORE-TEX in our premium products for a couple of good reasons. Let us walk you through how we do it and why we do it.

Waterproof
Because of GORE-TEX’s GUARANTEED TO KEEP YOU DRY™ promise, GTX products are 100% waterproof, keeping you dry and comfortable even when you’re riding in the worst weather conditions.

Windproof
Because GORE-TEX materials are windproof, wind chill is severely reduced if not totally eliminated, that way you’ll remain cozy inside your motorcycle gear.

Breathable
The breathability of the GORE-TEX technology will let your sweat evaporate properly through the fabric which prevents overheating and sweat build-up on your skin.

Taking a closer look at the GORE-TEX membrane

The GORE-TEX membrane is the core of all our GORE-TEX products. It contains over 1.4 billion microscopic pores per square cm (9 billion per square inch). These pores are 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet yet 700 times larger than a water vapor molecule.

That’s essentially the reason why water can’t get in from the outside, but water vapor can get out from the inside.

Laminates and liners

The GORE-TEX membrane can be applied using different construction techniques, all depending on the intended use of the garment and desired functional aspects.

We’ll take a closer look and explain what it all means.

Lamination explained

When you see the term “laminate” or “lamination,” it refers to the way the membrane is applied to the outer shell; it is literally laminated or bonded to the outer fabric and protected by a carrier fabric against damage. All the stitching seams are made waterproof by seam-taping them.

There are three major benefits to this system. The first is that it offers the highest level of breathability. Next, it’s a lightweight and quick-drying outer shell because of less water pick-up and, the last, a layer that doesn’t saturate with rapidly cooling down water prevents the transfer of cold to the body. We use two different GORE-TEX laminates in our garments:

2-layer laminate

The GORE-TEX membrane here is only bonded to the outer fabric. Without a protective “backing fabric,” it’s more likely to damage the membrane so we always apply a protective liner on our garments.

3-layer laminate

This construction bonds the GORE-TEX membrane between the outer fabric and the inner lining and it is protected by a “backing fabric.” The backing fabric in itself is so strong that there’s no need to add an additional protective lining.

Liner explanation

We also have outfits with a removable GORE-TEX liner, which serves as a separately wearable waterproof jacket. It’s found under the outer shell and is lightweight, extremely breathable, and easy to stow away when the sun is shining bright in the sky.

The advantage of the liner system is that the outer shell of the jacket or pants weigh less and offer a more flexible feel because of the lack of lamination. The disadvantage is that the outer shell will more easily pick water up in heavy rain, and it can take a while to dry in cold and wet weather.
